MEETING DESCRIPTION:
Ultrasound has been proven to allow for better detection of recurrent thyroid cancer in patients with negative total body iodine scans. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid is the only diagnostic test today allowing for differentiation of benign from cancerous thyroid nodules. Thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration can become an extension of laboratory results, nuclear medicine studies and physical examination of the thyroid gland. FNA used in private practice can reduce the cost for the evaluation and treatment of thyroid nodules for patients. This six-hour course will guide Endocrinologists through the basic physics of ultrasound and transducer selection needed for optimum scanning techniques. Also covered will be thyroid anatomy and ultrasound examination protocols. Physician attendees will be taught to distinguish between cystic and solid lesions, identify micro calcifications and lesion vascularity that can assist with determining if a lesion is benign or malignant. This course will begin in the classroom and progress to AHEC’s in-house scan lab to utilize live models for development of scanning techniques. Also provided will be hands-on practice of Fine Needle Aspiration Techniques for thyroid nodule assessment.
Course Topics
• Physics and Instrumentation
• Scan Protocols
