o allow for better detection of recurrent thyroid cancer in patients w
ith negative total body iodine scans. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of
the thyroid is the only diagnostic test today allowing for differenti
ation of benign from cancerous thyroid nodules. Thyroid ultrasound and
fine needle aspiration can become an extension of laboratory results,
nuclear medicine studies and physical examination of the thyroid glan
 d. FNA used in private practice can reduce the cost for the evaluation
and treatment of thyroid nodules for patients. This six-hour course w
ill guide Endocrinologists through the basic physics of ultrasound and
transducer selection needed for optimum scanning techniques. Also cov
ered will be thyroid anatomy and ultrasound examination protocols. Phy
sician attendees will be taught to distinguish between cystic and soli
d lesions, identify micro calcifications and lesion vascularity that c
an assist with determining if a lesion is benign or malignant. This co
urse will begin in the classroom and progress to AHEC’s in-house sca
n lab to utilize live models for development of scanning techniques. A
lso provided will be hands-on practice of Fine Needle Aspiration Techn
iques for thyroid nodule assessment.\n\nCourse Topics\n• Physics and
Instrumentation\n• Scan Protocols\n• Transducer selection and sca
n orientation\n• Anatomy of the normal thyroid\n• Ultrasound chara
cteristics of both cystic and solid nodules\n• Comparison of nuclear
medicine studies versus ultrasound findings\n• Evaluation of images
\n• Hands-on scanning and fine needle aspiration techniques for thyr
 oid biopsy\n\nINSTRUCTORS:\nWhelan\n\nCME HOURS: 8\n\nLECTURE TOPICS:\
