Connecting Radiology | Enabling collaboration and professional development

Reston, VA (November 7, 2011) — The Board of Directors of the American College of Radiology’s Radiology Leadership Institute™ (RLI) recently laid the foundation for radiology’s first professional development and leadership academy by establishing the RLI Common Body of Knowledge™ (CBK). The RLI CBK provides the framework for delivery of multi-level, in-depth instruction in critical leadership areas, including:

  • Finance and Economics Ethics and Professionalism Legal and Regulatory
  • Strategic Planning
  • Practice Management
  • Professional Development
  • Service, Quality and Safety

Each of the levels of instruction — which encompass the skills necessary for radiologists to become successful leaders in today’s dynamic health care landscape — will place a particular emphasis on the areas of practice management, professional development and legal and regulatory issues. Competency in these areas is critical to leadership skill development. The fifth (and final) level of RLI will be honorary.

“Traditionally, it has been the best clinicians that have risen through the leadership ranks looking to on-the-job experience to gain knowledge in the non-clinical areas,” said Cynthia S. Sherry, MD, FACR, medical director of RLI and chair of the ACR Commission on Leadership and Practice Development. “Now, the system is less accommodating. The business of medicine has become much more complex and demanding, and the system has higher expectations of physician leaders, including radiologists. If radiologists are to play a meaningful part in the rollout of health care reform, it is critical for them to obtain these leadership skills.”

With the completion of the RLI CBK, the RLI Board of Directors will continue to work closely with RLI faculty, ACR education department staff and other subject matter experts in developing a robust RLI education curriculum.

The Institute’s inaugural event is July 12–15, 2012, at Northwestern University’s Evanston, IL campus.
