Hospitals Encouraged to Consider Value-Added Service of Hospital-Based Radiology Groups
Hospital executives should consider the value-added services of hospital-based radiology groups before allowing radiology departments to be taken over by teleradiologists or other specialists, according to an article in the September 2011 issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology a href="http://www.jacr.org/">http://www.jacr.org/> .

(ARIZONA, USA) - An 86 year old man in Arizona presents with a large foreign body, specifically a pair of gardening shears impaled into his orbit. CT scan demonstrates the extent of the injury. After removal of this large foreign body, the patient has retained nearly full vision without any significant serious long term complications expected.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public; in particular, the medical imaging community; about the potential for inadvertent, increased radiation exposure in patients who underwent or will be undergoing cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) scans with rubidium (Rb)-82 chloride injection from CardioGen-82 (manufactured by Bracco Diagnostics, Inc.). A CardioGen-82 PET scan is one of a variety of nuclear medicine scans that use radioactive drugs to evaluate the…

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING -- Teleradiology: Love, Loathe, or Laissez-Faire?)
There are few buzzwords likelier to get a strong reaction from radiologists than the one mentioned above. Bring it up, and folks can get animated, agitated, or downright angry. Terms like “commoditization” and “predatory competition” follow, and the tone is often one of us-versus-them.
Part of what makes this such a tinderbox is that “teleradiology” refers to a heterogeneous group of entities, and it’s…

Transcript of Karen Shoffner, Chief of Radiology:
"I've been with the VA since 1994. I came here in, actually I came here straight from my training, and to be honest with you, I wasn't sure I wanted to stay. And that's because I really didn't know anything about the VA. And little did I know that I was about to embark on probably the best career move of my life.
We have seen tremendous improvements in the way that the VA provides and delivers healthcare for their veterans.…

ACR Statement on Landmark Mammography Screening Trial
A landmark paper published in the July 2011 issue of Radiology, one of the leading journals for medical imaging, should put an end to the controversies over the effectiveness of mammography screening.
The study, known as the Two County Trial in Sweden, is a randomized, controlled trial (RCT), one of the most rigorous types of scientific studies available to evaluate the efficacy of medical tests. The 29-year follow-up…

First I'd like to say that I try to steer away from politics on this blog. This blog's primary purpose is for education and I don't think creating a segregation of our political dichotomy is a smart way of encouraging readership. With that said, we have a major problem in Washington. Sure, there are differing views on how to improve the economy, lower unemployment, how to conduct our defense department, so on and so forth. However, one thing that I think most people would agree upon, if…

What is the NRDR by the ACR?
The National Radiology Data Registry is a data warehouse for the registries listed below. The primary purpose of NRDR is to aid facilities with their quality improvement programs and efforts to improve patient care by comparing facility data to that of their region and the nation. A practice or facility may choose to participate in any or all registries as appropriate for their practice. When a facility joins more than one registry, the warehouse allows…
