VRC buys Nighthawk for $170 Million+

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) -- Virtual Radiologic buys out NightHawk, says it’s an ideal match

Virtual Radiologic announced Sept. 27 it will acquire NightHawk, a publicly traded national teleradiology practice, making Virtual Radiologic the largest radiology practice in the country. However, radiologists aren’t too worried about the deal because Virtual Radiologic still has to compete with thousands of other practices.

Radiology Incidental Findings - the latest research

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) -- What to do about incidental findings: the (less than) 1% solution

Pathologies such as infections, or even tumors, crop up from time to time in patients examined for entirely unrelated issues. These “incidental findings” can put doctors—and patients—in a tight spot. How do they proceed with the patient, knowing that many of the asymptomatic signs of disease may never lead to clinical problems, or may simply be false positives?

For those who… Continue

California New Radiation Law - Radiologists must now report dose

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) -- California gets landmark radiologist dose reporting law California radiologists will be required to incorporate radiation dose levels in their reports under a measure signed into law Thursday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The measure requires that radiologists include in their reports the dose length product or the CT dose index if the machine is able to calculate it. Radiologists have never had to do that before, according to Don Stockett, a plaintiff’s attorney who… Continue

Radiologist Diagnostic Accuracy Drops As Day goes on...

Radiologists’ diagnostic accuracy drops as the day goes on

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) - By Rebekah Moan

Now there’s proof after a day of interpreting images radiologists are less accurate, more tired, unable to focus, and experience eyestrain compared to earlier in the day. A study in the Journal of the American College of Radiology compared the ability of radiologists and residents to read bone exams earlier in the day to later in the day.

Compared to later… Continue

Radiology News -- Changing the FDA; a look through the cliché files

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) -- There’s been plenty of talk over the years about the FDA being broken—its review process is too slow, its decisions flawed, its costs too high. The talk has come from industry, the public, and academia. The catalyst has been frustration. The makers of medical devices must wait for the FDA to decide whether a device is “substantially equivalent” to one already on the market when clearing a device through the 510(k) process, or “safe and effective” when shepherding a… Continue

Radiology News - New meaning lurks inside those tiny blurs on CT scans

(DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING) -- A millenium passed between the anatomy of Galen and the physiology of William Harvey. It's been a mere eight years since the blurry spots on spiral CT called ground glass opacities (GGOs) were linked to early lung cancer. Already, the first hints are emerging of what they may actually mean to malignant transformation.

Given the speed of progress in molecular science, it's reasonable to expect some clarity soon in the uncertainties surrounding GGOs that… Continue
