PORT-au-PRINCE, Haiti (NNS) -- The radiology facility aboard hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) is equipped to provide doctors with critical information about patients coming on board for treatment.

The radiology unit is currently treating patients in Haiti which is the first stop on Continuing Promise 2009 (CP09).

CP09 is a partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean nations who share a common interest in making the Americas stable and secure. The ship is uniquely capable of providing health care with the use of an extensive variety of medical facilities on board including a radiology department with more than $5 million worth of equipment.

"Our radiology unit is capable of performing a handful of services," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class, a radiology technician. "We have such technologically advanced equipment that allows us to do procedures for patients that are less invasive and in return create less of a threat on a patient's life."

Services offered by Comfort's Radiology Department include diagnostic X-rays, ultrasounds, CT Scans and interventional radiology procedures like fluoroscopy which is a live form of X-ray. In addition to standard radiological procedures, the staff also screen patients for tuberculosis to determine if they can board the ship.

"What we do is not just for clinical evaluation but for the safety of the patients and our fellow crew members," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Kleinne Lapid.

"Coming from a third world country really makes me appreciate the fact that I get to help people in need. This is my first humanitarian mission and having the opportunity to make a positive impact in the patient's lives is very rewarding," added Lapid.

After the Haiti stop, Comfort will continue its four-month humanitarian and civic assistance mission to seven countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in support of CP09.
