FROM THE ACR:
URGENT! Beware of Fraudulent Medicare Faxes
ACR has learned that some physicians’ offices in various states have received faxes from individuals who impersonate representatives of Medicare Fiscal Intermediaries (FI’s) or contractors. The faxes claim that the physicians may risk losing Medicare reimbursement -- unless their offices complete a survey questionnaire or provide an update of their account information within 48 hours and return it via fax to an 866 toll-free number. Reportedly, once these parties receive that information, the perpetrators can set up a fake office and fraudulently bill for medical services. The scheme then profits by having payment on services funneled to “off-shore” accounts.
ACR urges its members not to hand over via fax their sensitive practice information such as tax identification number, UPIN and related data that could be compromised. If you receive any suspicious fax, please contact your local Medicare carrier and county medical association using the contact information you have previously been given by those organizations (not any given in the fax)
