Bristol, CT (7/23/09) – Bristol Hospital has received a one million dollar combined gift from Beekley Corporation and the Beekley Family Foundation to help fund its new comprehensive breast care center. In recognition of this generous gift to the community, the center will be named The Beekley Center for Breast Health and Wellness at Bristol Hospital. This announcement was made at Beekley Corporation’s new corporate headquarters on One Prestige Lane, Bristol with Bristol Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Kurt A. Barwis and Eva Wickwire, Bristol Hospital’s Chief Development Officer in attendance. The Beekley Center for Breast Health and Wellness at Bristol Hospital, a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary breast care center, will offer a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling. The Center will support the Planetree model of care that provides a patient-centered holistic approach to health care - promoting mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical healing for patients and their families. Construction should begin in early 2010 with completion anticipated in the spring of 2011. In announcing the gift to Bristol Hospital and the naming of the new breast center, Beekley Corporation Chief Executive Officer Ayn S. LaPlant stated, “This honor truly reflects the passion and dedication the associates of Beekley Corporation exhibit on a daily basis in the fight against breast cancer and demonstrates how large a footprint even a small company can leave when its associates have a personal commitment to giving back to the community.” A medical products company dedicated to creating innovative solutions to improve diagnostic communication, Beekley Corporation introduced the first ever professional skin marker for diagnostic imaging, developed the “marking for meaning” shape system for mammography, and is known as the innovative force and world leader of radiologic skin markers, biopsy and patient care devices for Mammography; Breast Biopsy; Radiation Therapy; MRI; CT-Scan and General Imaging. Beekley’s simple, innovative medical products have helped imaging, surgical, and therapy professionals save time, improve accuracy, enhance communication, and provide a better patient experience. Beekley Corporation and Bristol Hospital have been partners in supporting the fight against breast cancer for many years. Beekley Associates annually raise funds through a number of efforts to support the hospital’s free mammogram program and currently provide eight days of free mammograms each year for women who are uninsured in the community. “We are very proud of our partnership with Beekley Corporation,” commented Kurt Barwis. “These employees clearly embrace the vision, dignity and compassion that began with Mason Beekley many years ago. Because of our well-established strengths in breast services, including clinicians with expertise in treating breast disease, we envision this to be a premier center for prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The generosity of Beekley’s employees and shareholders will allow us to move forward with this vision and it reinforces our commitment that we made to this community years ago when we launched the Bristol Community Breast Health Project.” The Beekley Family Foundation, based in Hartford, is a legacy of philanthropist W. Mason Beekley, former Chairman and CEO of the Beekley Corporation, who passed away in 2001. “It is a great honor for the Beekley family to join with Bristol Hospital to become part of the solution and support a place where loved ones can be healed physically and mentally in what can be a time of stress and upheaval,” commented Lorie Q. Beekley, a director of the Beekley Family Foundation and one of Mason Beekley’s four daughters. “It is a tribute to the love and dedication that one man, W. Mason Beekley, had to his family and to his dream.” "A gift of this magnitude makes a profound impact,” commented Eva Wickwire. “We are so very fortunate, and deeply grateful, that benefactors of such visionary proportions and generosity are providing Bristol Hospital with the means to make this Center a reality for the community." The development of the Beekley Center for Breast Health and Wellness comes as a logical progression of Bristol Hospital’s focus on cancer care with the recent opening of Bristol Hospital’s new Cancer Care Center. The Cancer Care Center is affiliated with the Yale-New Haven Cancer Network, which has provided for the expansion and advancement of Bristol Hospital’s cancer services to patients and their families in the communities served by Bristol Hospital. This partnership with the Yale-New Haven Cancer Network also provides access to clinical resources, preventive and curative clinical research trials, and other support services from Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale Cancer Center. The Cancer Care Center has also recently expanded its clinical staff with the recent addition of two new female oncologists, Dr. Sapna Khubchandani, and Dr. Driola Brahaj, who are joining the staff this summer.
