VASCULAR CARE 2011:
Best Practices in Vascular Therapy
FEBRUARY 6—9, 2011
SUNDAY—WEDNESDAY
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
As the population ages, there is an increasing need to recognize and effectively manage vascular diseases. Arterial diseases commonly affect older adults, especially those with cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, tobacco use and hyperlipidemia. Venous thrombosis and chronic venous insufficiency are even more common problems, with disabling and potentially life-threatening
complications. This fifth annual installment of the UC Davis
Vascular Center’s Vascular Care series addresses the challenges of managing arterial and venous diseases, with an examination of the evidence upon which practice guidelines have been based.
As diagnostic and therapeutic technologies have developed
rapidly in the past several years, vascular care specialists now
have a broader array of choices and options. This educational
program broadly addresses many of the aspects of vascular disease management, emphasizing the value of a multi-disciplinary approach and applications of novel technologies. In addition to reviewing the clinical care and diagnostic evaluation of these patients, the program examines contemporary surgical and endovascular options for revascularization, reviews practice standards, and addresses the challenges of clinical decisionmaking for problems with limited evidence to guide choices. The program includes opportunities for audience participation in sessions and case-based discussions.
The program focuses on the education needs of cardiologists,
surgeons, and radiologists who treat peripheral vascular
diseases. The program is also intended for other health-care
providers, including nurses and advanced practice nurses,
podiatrists, endocrinologists, primary care providers, wound
care specialists, as well as radiology, cardiovascular and
vascular laboratory technologists. As in prior years, Vascular
Care 2011 also has a special session on the emerging specialty of vascular nursing.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
• Identify clinical topics that have limited strength of evidence
for CPG recommendations so informed decisions can be made in tailoring therapy to specific patient conditions.
• Discuss diagnostic and treatment options for peripheral arterial, carotid, renal, mesenteric and venous diseases, as well as for aortic aneurysms, in order to provide cost effective care with optimal patient functional outcomes.
• Compare current and future medical, surgical and endovascular treatment options for vascular disease to ensure access to the option most appropriate for the patient.
• Identify complications following endovascular and surgical
revascularization and develop management strategies for
these complications to reduce mortality, risk of limb loss and
other complications.
