Event Description

Target Audience: All registered sonographers, student sonographers, and radiologic technologists who desire entry level training with vascular ultrasound.

 

Overall goal of activity: Designed to enhance the knowledge and skills in the areas of vascular technology by introducing participants to laboratory acceptable scanning protocols and extensive hands-on training.

 

Description: This one day, non-physics course introduces the participants to the renal duplex examination. Topics will include: abdominal and visceral anatomy, physiology, and mechanisms of disease. Emphasis will be placed on renal artery duplex imaging protocols with extensive hands on scanning of the renal vasculature.

 

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the normal anatomy of the kidney and renal arteries
  • Explain the common indications for renal artery duplex
  • Describe patient preparation, transducer selection, patient position, and images that should be obtained during the renal artery duplex examination
  • Describe the use of Doppler when evaluating the renal arteries
  • Explain the effect of kidney transplants in relation to renal artery duplex
  • Demonstrate proper scanning techniques for renal artery assessment
