Description:
Appropriate use of ultrasound at the point of care can decrease medical errors, provide more efficient real-time diagnosis and supplement or replace more advanced imaging in appropriate situations. Ultrasound, when used at the point of care, facilitates collaboration and efficient care by yielding immediate findings that can lead to high value referrals. In cases when advanced diagnostic imaging is medically warranted this allows better targeting of diagnostic studies. Ultrasound should be employed for procedural guidance. Expansion of ultrasound to include the echo applications has been the fastest growing application. Ultrasound enables immediate diagnosis and accelerates treatment sometimes sparing the patient the cost of a more expensive procedure.

In healthcare we are advocating for Value-based health care where the key goal is to improve patient outcomes per dollar spent. Through more than a half century of use to aid diagnosis and guide procedures, ultrasound has demonstrated in both studies and clinical practice that it can—and does—deliver proven value when available for use at the point of care. It is the most safe and cost-effective technology available for diagnosis. Having the skills to perform focused evaluations of the abdomen, chest, first trimester pregnancy and heart are necessary for today’s physicians. Participants in this course will benefit from “hands on scan labs” where scanning live models or phantoms to simulate pathology will develop your diagnostic skills.

Target Audience
Emergency Medicine Physicians, Trauma Surgeons, Critical Care Physicians, Intensivists, Internal Medicine and Family Practice Physicians, Nurses, and first responders who will be performing and interpreting point of care ultrasound examinations.
