Event Description

Target Audience: All registered sonographers, student sonographers, and radiologic technologists who desire entry level training with vascular ultrasound.

Overall goal of activity: To enhance the knowledge and skills in the areas of vascular technology, sonographic principles and instrumention, and other topics related to sonography

Description: - This course focuses on the technical aspects of ultrasound assessment of upper and lower extremity peripheral vascular systems. Participants will be introduced to physiologic testing using continuous-wave Doppler. Topics will include an introduction to Doppler physics in relation to normal venous and arterial blood flow in the extremities, anatomy of lower and upper extremity peripheral vascular systems, mechanisms of disease, scan protocols and techniques.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe general Doppler physics principles associated with peripheral venous and arterial hemodynamics
  • Identify the difference between normal and abnormal venous and arterial imaging spectral analysis
  • Describe the anatomy encountered during a venous and arterial duplex imaging examination
  • Explain the signs and symptoms associated with venous disease
  • Explain the signs and symptoms associated with peripheral arterial disease
  • Identify the ultrasound appearance of normal arterial and venous anatomy and blood flow.
  • Demonstrate optimal scanning techniques and proficiency in “knobology” through application of Doppler principles
  • Described the characteristics of the venous Doppler signals obtained during venous duplex imaging
  • Described the characteristics of the venous Doppler signals obtained during arterial duplex imaging
  • Define and become familiar with different arterial and venous disease states.
  • Describe physiologic testing of lower extremities

Approved for up to 24 SDMS CMEs
