This workshop will provide participants with American Heart Association PALS® certification and better prepare them to handle adverse events that may result from procedural sedation administration. Closed claims analysis, reports and review of the literature indicate that the majority of complications and situations where intervention was required, regarding sedation administration, resulted from unanticipated drug reactions or drug interactions and/or respiratory compromise. Many institutions and state dental boards require ACLS or PALS certification to maintain sedation privileges, however the contemporary ACLS/PALS course does not focus on airway complications or respiratory depression nor does it review the pharmacology or pharmacokinetics of sedative agents. This workshop will engage participants in a sedative agent review, standard of care monitoring, airway assessment and management utilizing simulation for multiple devices and pertinent mega-code scenarios which will better prepare them for pediatric procedural sedation emergencies.
