MEETING DESCRIPTION:
This one-day hand’s-on learning activity will bring students and teacher together for an intensive learning experience in musculoskeletal ultrasound with the intent of introducing the student to the wealth of information ultrasound is capable of revealing about the morphology and dynamic physiology of the knee. The knee can be accurately evaluated by high-resolution ultrasound quickly, economically and atraumatically using this modality. Time in lecture will be balanced by dynamic scanning sessions, which serve to re-enforce the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the bony knee, knee joint, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the knee. Normal examples and common conditions of the knee will be presented along with techniques the examiner will find useful in defining normal from abnormal knee anatomy. Pathology such as tendon tear, boney abnormality, synovial diseases, patellar disease, and abnormalities of the cartilage will be discussed. A structured approach for examining the knee with ultrasound will be addressed. Students interested in learning to use ultrasound to evaluate the knee will take home a wealth of knowledge useful for everyday clinical applications. A brief discussion of ultrasound-guided injections will be presented.
Course Topics
• Normal knee anatomy and physiology
• The normal appearance of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone
• Examples of common knee injuries and disease
