Event Description

Mastering the Art of Digital Radiography
Techniques and Positioning in Your Digital World

8 Hours ARRT Category A Credit
Dennis Bowman, RT(R)

About this Seminar

Most digital radiography seminars discuss how the equipment works and the physics behind it. This seminar is designed to give technologists practical knowledge to help them use their CR and DR equipment. With over 250 images and 9 videos, the presentation will feel like a "hands-on" workshop.
This seminar will confront the universal problems and concerns with digital radiography. You will learn why you should be using 15-20 kVp higher and one third the mAs required for film/screen. Little training exists to provide an understanding of the use of a histogram, magnification modes and the Dose Exposure Index (DEI) number. All will be discussed throughout the seminar.
Using film/screen, radiographers once worried about a film being too dark or light, now they need to be concerned about acceptable quantum mottle and over radiating patients. This will lead to a better understanding of how to utilized this new technology to improve the art of radiography and science.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this seminar,
attendees will be able to:

• Select appropriate technical factors to optimize image acquisition, consistent with ALARA.
• Describe at least three different ways to critique a digital image.
• Discuss the concept of acceptable mottle.
• Identify what is needed to change the technique chart for digital systems.
• Describe why a Ferlic Filter is beneficial on a cross table lateral hip view.
• Explain how to set up a tube at the proper angle for a portable chest.
• Explain the newest information concerning lead shielding.
• Explain the legal implications of not marking images, post processing collimation and changing algorithms.

About the Instructor

Dennis Bowman, RT(R)
Dennis has been an active radiologic technologist for over 30 years. He has been employed as a Staff Technologist at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, California since 1990. He has also been the Clinical Instructor for the Cabrillo College Radiology Program since 1991. With a digital dosimeter and a vast array of body phantoms, Dennis has put in hundreds of hours researching, studying and putting into practice, digital techniques. In addition to the weekly classes he gives his students, Dennis has traveled nationwide lecturing on how best to use and critique digital radiography. As a "shooting tech", Dennis fully understands all the problems techs encounter and is able to help them solve those problems with humor. He is experienced, knowledgeable and brings an enthusiastic teaching style you will enjoy.

Who Should Attend
