Initial MQSA Training Requirement for Mammography

If you are looking for a comprehensive course on mammography skill training and enhancement, this is the course for you! You will cover every aspect of a mammography procedure required to meet initial training requirements as outlined by MQSA. The topics covered will include anatomy and physiology, hands-on positioning lab, film critique sessions and clinical participation. Quality control, pathology, special procedures and imaging the augmented breast are a must for the new mammography technologist and will be covered in detail as highlights in this class. The instructional material provided is a great resource once you return to the workplace.

Professional liability insurance is provided for on-site clinical rotations in Option 2. Clinical dress codes apply for the clinical rotations. ARRT certification and/or a fully unrestricted state license are required for admission to the training. Registration must be received at 3 weeks in advance for Option 2 to assure clinical rotation sites. This course has been evaluated and meets the 40 contact hour initial training requirements as mandated by the MQSA standards for the FDA. You will also receive 32 hours Category A credit. This course meets the guidelines for states requiring special education for mammography.

Training Options

In April, 1999, the final rules of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) became effective that required entry level training for mammography including the performance of 25 patient procedures under the super-vision of a qualified mammographer. Advanced Health Education Center, Ltd. will accomplish this through two training options listed below.

  • Option 1
    • Facilities may supervise the MQSA required 25 patient procedures for their employees following the didactic program. The supervising clinical faculty must be a RT(R)(M) meeting MQSA requirements. Supervising clinical faculty will be required to supervise, document and return original clinical evaluation forms for students to complete the course. All paperwork for Option 1 will be emailed after payment has been processed. Paperwork for Option 1 must be provided at least 2 weeks prior to the start date of the course.
  • Option 2
    • If your facility is unable to supervise the required 25 patient procedures to complete your training, AHEC can facilitate a clinical site in Houston, Texas for an additional two days immediately after the classroom portion of the course is complete. This option requires an additional course fee and paperwork. Please view the "Mammography Initial Training Option 2" course description for details. All paperwork for Option 2 will be emailed after payment has been processed. Paperwork for Option 2 must be provided at least 3 weeks prior to the start date of the course.

Digital Mammography and Clinical Application

MQSA requires at least 8 hours of training in the modality of your choice. AHEC's Mammography Initial Training courses DO NOT cover training in digital mammography - only film screen. Attendees in need of digital mammography training MUST register for the "Digital Mammography and Clinical Applications" course the Monday immediately after the "Mammography Initial Training" course days. For more information, please visit the course description page for "Digital Mammography and Clinical Applications" or call us at 800-239-1361.
