Objectives & Topics
At the completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

1. Identify the anatomy/physiology of the upper and lower extremity venous and arterial systems.
2. Discuss Doppler/color physics & be able to (sonographers) apply these principles to optimize system controls or (physicians) utilize this data for recognizing technical errors, which may result in misdiagnosis.
3. Perform routine scan protocols & document Doppler waveforms for arterial & venous evaluations of the lower extremity.
4. Perform routine scan protocol for upper extrem. venous evaluation.
5. Identify normal/abnormal spectral Doppler/color characteristics and waveform characteristics for diagnosing arterial and venous disease.
6. Explain methods for obtaining quantitative data and the diagnostic relevance of each measurement.
7. Recognize imaging characteristics of acute versus chronic DVT.
8. State the indications and applications of indirect testing methods for lower arterial disease.
9. Increase knowledge and confidence to perform and/or interpret upper and lower PV ultrasound exams.
10. Apply the information discussed in a clinical setting, under supervised conditions until an accepted level of proficiency has been achieved.

Course Topics:

• Doppler fundamentals
• Venous anatomy/scan techniques, normal characteristics and pathology
• Upper extremity venous evaluation
• Saphenous vein mapping
• Live demo: Venous insufficiency and upper extremities
• Lower extremity evaluation for DVT
• Lower extremity arterial anatomy/physiology
• Clinical exam/indirect testing
• Direct testing/duplex scanning
• Live demos: duplex arterial, segmental pressures
• Treatment of lower PAD
• Hands-on sessions

Target Audience

Sonographers, physicians, PAs & other medical professionals learning to perform peripheral vascular duplex/color exams. Also, physicians who are at an entry level of interpretation. Physician may include (but are not limited to) those involved with internal medicine, cardiology, radiology, and general/vascular surgery.

CME Credit Statements

The Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Approved by the ASRT for 15 Category A continuing education credit. Note: ASRT credits are accepted by the ARRT as Category A credits.

This course also meets CME/CEU requirements for ARDMS. Note: While offering the CME credit hours noted above, activities are not intended to provide extensive training or certification for exam performance or interpretation.
