Abdominal Ultrasound
January 27-29, 2011

Who Should Attend:
Physicians, clinicians, medical professionals, and cross-training technologists interested in the sonographic manifestations of normal and pathologic conditions of abdominal organs. Scanning experience is recommended.

Program Description:

The two-day Abdominal program covers the broad range of applications for ultrasound evaluation of the abdomen. The program consists of lectures supplemented by demonstrations and case reviews. The Saturday optional hands-on experience with live models is provides an opportunity for clinicians to hone skills and develop new ones.

Emphasis is placed on an integrated approach combining details of normal ultrasound anatomy and typical ultrasound patterns of abdominal pathology.

Lecture Topics:

Specific lecture topics include a review of principles of ultrasound physics, instrumentation and imaging techniques including Doppler, and ultrasound evaluation of:

Detailed abdominal vascular anatomy- Liver
Biliary System- Kidneys and Retroperitoneum
Pancreas- Spleen
Great Vessels- Thyroid and Parathroid
Urinary Bladder- Scrotum
Pediatric Abdomen (limited)

A typical class day runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. An optional hands-on scanning session is available on Saturday morning from 9:00 am to approximately noon. This session allows students the opportunity to scan models using a variety of ultrasound equipment.

Educational Objectives:

Through attending this course, the participant should be able to:

appreciate the relationship between acoustic physics and the sonographic representation of tissue

recognize the acoustic representation of normal abdominal anatomy and identify pathologies of the abdomen from ultrasound images

understand and discuss the capabilities and limitations of ultrasound evaluation of the abdomen

CME Credits and Tuition:

This program is approved for 11 hours of AMA Category I credit.
