Samsung Reveals New Efficient Scanner

Medical imaging giant Samsung recently unleashed its latest innovation: the OmniTom, a 16-slice CT scanner. After receiving FDA clearance in August, the machine was scheduled to debut at the Radiological Society of North America’s annual conference in Chicago.

The OmniTom is a part of Samsung’s AccE campaign, which stands for Access, Accuracy, and Efficiency. According to a press release, the OmniTom is a step up from the CereTom, an 8-slice portable CT scanner. Aside from being ideal for cranial procedures and keeping a small footprint, this new scanner features several additional advancements, including:

  • Omni-directional wheels make it easier and less noisy to move the machine from one space to the next.
  • Sophisticated and sharp image quality enabled by “a 50 percent increase in CNR.”
  • The flexible gantry opening widens to 40 cm, which makes it easier to conduct full body pediatric scanning and imaging of the adult head and neck.
  • A cutting edge safety system that’s equipped with an external drive, which aids in preventing collisions and makes mobility easier.
  • Fast processing speeds allow clinicians to get real-time data on patients.

“We’ve made a CT product that’s lighter, more mobile, more accurate and faster,” said Dongsoo Jun, President of Health & Medical Equipment Business at Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “We hope the many doctors and technicians here at RSNA will be able to use it to benefit their patients.”
