Michael D. Hope Becomes New Radiology Chief at SF VA Medical Center

Starting March 2018, Michael D. Hope, MD, became the new chief of radiology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. He is taking over from interim chief, Stefanie Weinstein, MD.

This announcement marks Dr. Hope’s latest leadership position, as he also serves as the vice chair of the department of radiology and biomedical at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), co-director of the Vascular Imaging Research Center, and chair of the UCSF MRI safety committee. He holds awards from several organizations, including the North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging, Radiological Society of North America, and Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance. He’s also associate professor in residence at UCSF.

After graduating from Stanford University medical school in 2004, Dr. Hope pursued his diagnostic radiology residency at UCSF. Dr. Hope has been recognized for his immense achievements in using MRI to assess the heart and vascular system, including being the first to identify “abnormal helical aortic blood flow in patients with bicuspid aortic valves using 4D-flow MRI.” He’s the recipient of a NIH NHLBI grant to research abdominal aortic aneurysms using multimodality MRI. A prolific scholar, he has written 75 peer-reviewed papers that have been cited more than 2,000 times, and he’s also given over 60 lectures.

“I am confident that Dr. Hope will bring strong leadership, a commitment to clinical, research and educational excellence, and new organizational insight to our department’s activities at the San Francisco VA Medical Center,” said Christopher Hess, MD, PhD, chair of UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.
