Nevertheless, stroke is still the third leading cause of death and disability in the U.S., largely because healthcare facilities have not been able to bring these advancements to the bedside in a timely manner. Recognizing the scope of the problem and the need for integrated systems of stroke care, the Brain Attack Coalition (BAC) developed guidelines in 2000 for stabilizing and treating acute stroke patients in primary stroke centers.
