Dr. Geraldine McGinty Receives Thorwarth Award

This week, distinguished radiology community leader and breast cancer detection expert Geraldine McGinty, MD, MBA, FACR, was presented with the William T. Thorwarth, Jr., MD, Award. The American College of Radiology (ACR)-sponsored award is not distributed on an annual basis but given out incidentally to individuals who have made vast leadership contributions to economics and health policy in radiology.

Dr. McGinty has made significant strides in the imaging industry in the last decade. In May 2016, she became the first woman appointed the vice chair of the ACR’s Board of Chancellors. She has established herself as both an academic and strategy leader, and is assistant professor of clinical healthcare policy and research, and chief strategy and contracting officer at Weill Cornell Medical College. She also serves as Weill’s academic director of the executive MBA and masters in healthcare leadership dual degree program. She was a member of the American Medical Association’s Relative Value Update Committee between 2012 and 2016.

Dr. McGinty’s extensive experience in contract negotiation and imaging economics has paved the way for her to spearhead necessary improvements in payment models. According to Ezequiel Silva, MD, FACR, chair of the ACR Commission on Economics, "Dr. McGinty's experience as ACR RUC Advisor and RUC Panel member puts her in the unique position to effectively lead radiology's future in new payment models, through such initiatives as Imaging 3.0.”
