CAD nears clinical significance in pulmonary emboli

March 10, 2008 CAD nears clinical significance in pulmonary emboli H. A. Abella -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Computer-aided detection may lend an extra punch to the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism with multislice and dual-energy CT scanners. Studies by French and German researchers have shown it helps detect small, hard-to-spot clots lodged in the lungs' periphery. Multislice CT angiography has become the diagnostic standard in pulmonary embolism, with a well-established accuracy in the detection of proximal lesions. But CTA detection of peripheral PE remains challenging and time-consuming, and it may lead to false positives. Can CAD pick those small clots missed by the radiologist's naked eye in the first read? Yes, it can, said principal investigator of a study from France Dr. Marion Dewailly from the University of Lille.
