Breast cancer recurrence more common in some women

A recent Study on woman breast cancer has suggested that women with certain kind of breast cancer might have higher recurrence risk. The article reports that early breast cancer patients the positive-hormone status might help in forecasting if there is a need for extended treatment for the patients to prevent late recurrence.

The study was published in the online “Journal of the National Cancer Institute”, U.S.A. Researchers had analyzed data of two thousand eight hundred and thirty eight women who were treated for different stages of the disease (i.e.)stage I, II, or III disease from the year 1985 through 2001 and also remained free of disease for at least 5 years from the start of either adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapy.

The researchers found in their study that residual risk of recurrence was eleven percent for patients with 5 years, and twenty percent for patients with ten years. This was among the women who had been free of disease for five years after treatment. And also patients who suffered from higher stage disease and with hormone-positive tumours had a higher likelihood of late recurrence. The authors of the report also noted that even though the patients with hormone-positive tumours were subjected to endocrine therapy, they were more likely to have recurrence than patients with hormone-negative tumours.
