Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis refers to the spread of malignant cells through the CSF space. These cells can originate both in primary CNS tumours, as well as from distant tumours that have metastasized. For some tumours, chemotherapy can be administered intrathecally to try and control the disease (as in this case). Non-contrast T1WI here).
Primary intracerebral malignancies
- GBM and anaplastic astrocytoma
- medulloblastoma
- PNET
- ependymoma
- germinoma
- choroid plexus carcinoma
Widespread metastatic disease (more common)
- breast and lung cancer most common
- melanoma (as in a different case)
- lymphoma and leukaemia.
