I have worked as a PACS/RIS admin at an outpatient Radiology facility in Central Florida for a few years, I have recently moved back to Canada (Greater Toronto Area) and I am looking for some information on the state of diagnostic imaging and radiologists here in canada.
I am now a recruiter and I am looking at using my experience working at an imaging facility to help me recruit radiologists in Canada.
How is the job market for radiologists in canada?
Are there many jobs for radiologists to read MR and CT scans or are there mostly only BMD, Mammo and Ultra Sound studies?
What are the average salaries of radiologists in canada?
Salaries are marginally lower than the US, about 90%. Cases read as you say are more plain films, sono, etc and less ct/.mr versus US. There is somewhat of a shortage in Canada, mostly because of the socialized health care system and the fact that it is somewhat difficult for US people to work in Canada and vice versa, but even harder for US guys to work in Canada; since there are 50 states and innumerable medical facilities in the US with many near the Canadian border and less facilities, more bureaucracy and only a few canadian provinces and us people only want to work in the area around toronto generally because of language and weather, the effect is a net flow of canadian radiologists to the US. This has abated somewhat in the last years due to increasing equalization of pay on both sides of the border, but still true. You are also now competing with Nighthawk which has entered the Canadian market and is aggressively recruiting as well as many other international telerads companies who recruit canadian radiologists because they can very easily practice in British commonwealth countries and much of the EU with few barriers. thanks for the info Robert that is the exact info I was looking for, and generally what I suspected. All the private facilities in canada that I am contacting are mostly only doing the "plain film scans" and very rarely do any of them have MRI's. I am not a radiologist but I would assume if I was I would like to read the more challenging studies which are done on the CT and MR modalities. Its a shame that Canada most likely loses most of the good radiologists to other countries but they may change as there will probably be more private health care in canada
I think I am going to concentrate more on recruiting in the US.
