Connecting Radiology | Enabling collaboration and professional development

Hello,

I am giving a talk to some people who have no formal medical training and very limited exposure to Radiology. I am trying to help them understand the challenges faced by Radiologists every day.

I am hoping some of you can share some stories that would help people understand what the job is like. Humorous stories are especially desired, but anything that would help people understand the challenges Radiologists face every day would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Good question and that is great you are giving a talk to non-radiologists! Are you aware of the Face of Radiology Campaign by the ACR? They are definitely trying to get the exposure up...

as far as helping people understand what the job is like...

I sometimes have a difficult time explaining to friends, who are not MDs or in the medical field, what a radiologist does...

I typically use examples of mammography--a radiologist uses imaging to detect disease and guide therapy and most women > 40 years old understand this and have gotten a mammogram and even possibly met a radiologist.

In addition, I also describe interventional radiologists and what they do... in terms of stenting aneurysms or opening up vessels in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

In the ER, radiologists play a prominent role--I also explain that often times patients who go to the ED get some sort of imaging test.
