MEETING DESCRIPTION:
Venipuncture and Pharmacology for Contrast Media Procedures
Venipuncture is allowed in most states with the documented training. This course will provide the techniques for administration, the pharmacology of dose units, the importance of documentation and the response to allergic reactions. You will not want to miss this important opportunity to enhance your skills. Course includes both lecture and laboratory training with IV training arms.
Course Topics
• Safe and correct venipuncture techniques
• Aseptic techniques and infection control
• Patient safety, cooperation and education
• Administration of prescribed medications and contrast media
• Documentation, charting procedures and outcomes
• Recognition and a response to allergic reactions to contrast media or medications
Technologists who wish to participate in the class for informational purposes will receive 8 Hours of CE Credit and will not advance to the clinical participation.
*To meet California state requirements, you must have 10 hours of training and 10 venipuncture sticks under the supervision of a qualified instructor. For our course, a qualified instructor is a physician or registered nurse in your facility where you are employed. The venipunctures will be completed in the facility where you are employed, after permission has been obtained from the employer. Supervision should be by the radiologist from whom you will be accepting orders to perform the venipuncture.
It is required that you have current CPR training and that you receive in-service training in first aid, emergency response and the facility emergency response system. You will spend eight hours in the classroom in the theory and practice of venipuncture on IV training arms. The additional required two hours of training must be obtained in your facility and include crash cart procedures, emergency utilization of oxygen and the ambu or bag-valve mask. The clinical performance of the ten venipuncture sticks under supervision must be completed, documented, and the clinical supervisor must attest by signature to the satisfactory completion. After all required documentation is completed and returned to Advanced Health, a certificate will be issued documenting compliance to California state requirements. The required venipuncture sticks must be completed in a six-month period following the classroom portion.
