NASA, through the Advancement of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Microgravity (ADUM,) has studied biologic effects on the organs and systems of the human body using ultrasound. In order to do this, ultrasound systems had to be designed that could be used by non-medical personnel under the remote guidance of medical personnel in space. This course will lead you through most of the biologic findings and adaptations the human body undergoes in a microgravity situation. The use in space was so successful in diagnosing illness and injuries, that the ADUM branched out the use of remote ultrasound equipment in over 60 countries that are underserved and very remote locations, such as Mount Everest. The ability of an untrained operator to be coached has decreased mortality in those remote areas and improved care.
