Event Description

Prostate Imaging & Doppler
October 17, 2011

Program Coordinator: Ethan J. Halpern, MD, MS

Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for urologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists and sonographers.

Program Description:
This one-day program is a combined effort of the faculties of Urology, Radiology and Radiation Therapy. It provides an overview of established and recently developed approaches to ultrasound of the prostate with a special emphasis on endorectal scanning.

The course incorporates a variety of clinical perspectives to complement the basic information on physics, anatomy and pathology of the prostate gland. Our curriculum also covers issues of therapy and recent advances in technology that are changing the landscape of prostate diagnosis and treatment.

The course content is frequently updated as new standards and procedures develop in this fast-paced field. In recent courses, there has been a special lecture devoted to advanced techniques for detection of prostate cancer including contrast-enhanced imaging and elastography.

In addition to the didactic component, this program offers an optional practical hands-on experience, with live models, phantoms and a variety of instruments. Each participant, in the optional hands-on practicum, will have the opportunity to perform endorectal scanning of the prostate.

Educational Objectives:
Through attending this course, the participant should be able to:
• appreciate the relationship between acoustic physics and the sonographic representation of tissue
• discuss transrectal and transperineal approaches to biopsy of the prostate
• discuss the roles of harmonic imaging and transient response imaging of the prostate
• recognize normal prostate anatomy and identify pathologies of the prostate and seminal vesicles from ultrasound images
• identify the potential roles of Doppler imaging and contrast materials in the detection of prostate cancer
• understand the capabilities and limitations of ultrasound evaluation of the prostate

CME Credits and Tuition:
This program is approved for 9.5 hours of AMA Category I credit.

Tuition: $650
Optional Hands-On Practicum: $300
