MEETING DESCRIPTION:
This three-day “How-To” course will provide you with a basic, practical understanding of carotid ultrasound. The physics and instrumentation of carotid scanning, to include the spectral analysis and correlation is covered for obtaining quantitative information. The hemodynamics of the cerebrovascular system are explained as they relate to the Doppler procedure. You will learn to measure Intimal Medial Thickness (IMT) of the inner two layers of the carotid artery and it’s correlation to coronary artery disease. The use of color and the normal versus abnormal characteristics are discussed.

Objectives
At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
• Identify the ultrasound appearance of normal carotid anatomy, architecture and flow.
• Use color flow and imaging to evaluate carotid flow.
• Describe the use of ultrasound to characterize carotid arterial disease.
• Perform Doppler calculations in a complete carotid procedure.
• Perform a basic carotid arterial procedure using the correct protocol.
• Describe image-optimization for carotid artery ultrasound exams.
• Identify additional resources for information on carotid arterial ultrasound.
• Measure the intimal medial thickness of the cornary artery.
