Event Description

At the completion of the program the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify ultrasound anatomy of the fetal heart and integrate it with cardiac physiology.
  2. Demonstrate a routine protocol for an ultrasound evaluation of the fetal heart.
  3. List standard 2D documentation included in a routine ultrasound evaluation of the fetal heart.
  4. Describe commonly seen pathology of the fetal heart.
  5. Perform fetal Doppler assessment of the fetal heart.
  6. Discuss Doppler assessment of the fetal umbilical cord and middle cerebral artery.
  7. Discuss genetic screening during the 1st and 2nd trimester fetal evaluation.
  8. Describe placenta variants & discuss placenta abnormalities, predictions, precautions & treatment options.
  9. Recognize the ultrasound findings with central nervous system abnormalities, abdominal wall defects and skeletal dysplasias.
  10. Explain how the monochorionic placenta can affect identical twins resulting in twin transfusion syndrome and the role of ultrasound in detecting and managing this condition.
  11. Increase knowledge & confidence to perform/interpret OB & fetal heart U/S evaluations.

  • Fetal heart anatomy & physiology: Normal & abnormal, including measurement of cardiac structures & ductus venosus Doppler
  • Genetic screening in the 1st & 2nd Trimesters
  • Fetal Heart Ultrasound Exam: 4 Chamber View, Identifying Outflow Tracts/Great vessels, 3 Vessel view
  • Fetal Doppler overview: Diastolic function
  • E/A ratio, Systolic function – Great vessel velocities, Tei index – Global cardiac function, Mechanical P-R interval
  • Fetal heart protocol
  • 3D/4D (STIC) eval. of fetal heart
  • Placental variants & the umbilical cord including cord Doppler/ MCA
  • Placenta abnormalities: Including placenta previa, Accreta/Increta & percreta
  • Fetal CNS abnormalities
  • Fetal Abdomen: Variants & anomalies
  • Skeletal dysplasias
  • Monochorionic twins & Twin Transfusion Syndrome
  • Complex Case Studies
  • Hands-on sessions
