e difficult and can cause serious complications. Central venous cannul
ation (CVC) is an important procedure in the practice of emergency and
critical care medicine. With the increasing ability of bedside ultras
ound the technology has proven to reduce error and improve patient car
 e. The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, the Institute of Medi
cine and the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence have
all endorsed ultrasound-guided central venous cannulation (UGCVC) as a
recommended practice. Given the importance of CVC it is paramount tha
t physicians become proficient with UGCVC.\n\nAssessing and managing s
uperficial fluid collections using ultrasound-guided access is rapidly
becoming the standard of care in many medical institutions. Basic ult
rasound expertise is invaluable, but there is a whole array of ultraso
und procedures that can be performed that will increase your effective
ness and diagnostic accuracy. Go beyond the basics and get the skills
you need to expand your effective use of ultrasound in your clinical e
nvironment!\n\nParticipants in this course will benefit from hands-on
scan labs where the ultrasound faculty will teach you the essential sk
ills and techniques to perform exams that make a difference in patient
outcomes by demonstrating cardiac problems, deep vein thrombosis, or
need for an intervention that can de done under ultrasound guidance.\n
\nCourse Topics\n• Venous orientation and pathology to demonstrate D
VT. This topic will include the upper and lower extremities, to includ
e the jugular, subclavian, femoral, saphenous, and superficial veins o
f the upper extremity. Students will be taught the proper way to compr
ess veins, and use color Doppler to evaluate areas of suspected DVT pr
ior to inserting a line.\n• Ultrasound guided procedure to included
thoracentesis, and paracentesis, and central and peripheral line place
ment will be introduced as important and time saving ways of managing
critically ill patients. Hands-on practice will be offered for all top
ics on live model’s or phantoms.\n• A hands-on practice session wi
ll be conducted with phantoms to assist the student in learning the ha
nd-to-eye coordination needed to successfully manage these lesions.\n\
