 ING DESCRIPTION:\nUltrasound has been proven to allow for better detec
 tion of recurrent thyroid cancer in patients with negative total body 
 iodine scans. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid is the only
  diagnostic test today allowing for differentiation of benign from can
 cerous thyroid nodules. Thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration 
 can become an extension of laboratory results, nuclear medicine studie
 s and physical examination of the thyroid gland. FNA used in private p
 ractice can reduce the cost for the evaluation and treatment of thyroi
 d nodules for patients. This six-hour course will guide Endocrinologis
 ts through the basic physics of ultrasound and transducer selection ne
 eded for optimum scanning techniques. Also covered will be thyroid ana
 tomy and ultrasound examination protocols. Physician attendees will be
  taught to distinguish between cystic and solid lesions, identify micr
 o calcifications and lesion vascularity that can assist with determini
 ng if a lesion is benign or malignant. This course will begin in the c
 lassroom and progress to AHEC’s in-house scan lab to utilize live mo
 dels for development of scanning techniques. Also provided will be han
 ds-on practice of Fine Needle Aspiration Techniques for thyroid nodule
