n to allow for better detection of recurrent thyroid cancer in patient
s with negative total body iodine scans. Fine needle aspiration biopsy
of the thyroid is the only diagnostic test today allowing for differe
ntiation of benign from cancerous thyroid nodules. Thyroid ultrasound
and fine needle aspiration can become an extension of laboratory resul
ts, nuclear medicine studies and physical examination of the thyroid g
land. FNA used in private practice can reduce the cost for the evaluat
ion and treatment of thyroid nodules for patients. This six-hour cours
e will guide Endocrinologists through the basic physics of ultrasound
and transducer selection needed for optimum scanning techniques. Also
covered will be thyroid anatomy and ultrasound examination protocols.
Physician attendees will be taught to distinguish between cystic and s
olid lesions, identify micro calcifications and lesion vascularity tha
t can assist with determining if a lesion is benign or malignant. This
course will begin in the classroom and progress to AHEC’s in-house
scan lab to utilize live models for development of scanning techniques
. Also provided will be hands-on practice of Fine Needle Aspiration Te
chniques for thyroid nodule assessment.\n\nCourse Topics\n• Physics
and Instrumentation\n• Scan Protocols\n• Transducer selection and
scan orientation\n• Anatomy of the normal thyroid\n• Ultrasound ch
aracteristics of both cystic and solid nodules\n• Comparison of nucl
ear medicine studies versus ultrasound findings\n• Evaluation of ima
ges\n• Hands-on scanning and fine needle aspiration techniques for t
 hyroid biopsy\n\nINSTRUCTORS:\nWhelan\n\nCME HOURS: 8\n\nLECTURE TOPIC
