SUMMARY:Introduction to Critical Care Ultrasound
DESCRIPTION:Program Name: Introduction to Critical Care Ultrasound --
 March 2011\nStart Date: 03/16/2011\nEnd Date: 03/18/2011\nAMA Cat. 1 C
ME Credits: 24.0\nOther CME Credits: 22.25 ACEP\nAdvanced Registration

ogram.\n\nCourse Objectives:\nAt the completion of this program, the p
articipant should be able to:\n\n1. Discuss the basic fundamentals of
ultrasound physics/instrumentation and recognize image artifacts.\n2.
Demonstrate the operation of the ultrasound system controls and transd
ucer selection.\n3. Recognize normal/abnormal image characteristics of
the abdomen, thorax (including lung and pneumothorax), upper and lowe
r extremity venous system, and adult heart.\n4. Perform routine scan p
rotocols for evaluation of the abdomen, venous system of the lower and
upper extremities, thorax (including lung & pneumothorax), and adult
heart.\n5. Describe image orientation, transducer preparation, and sca
n protocols for performing use of ultrasound guidance in the placement
of peripheral and central venous lines and arterial catheters.\n6. De
monstrate ultrasound applications in the evaluation of the critically
ill unstable patient.\n7. Explain the use of ultrasound guidance for p
erforming thoracentesis, pericardiocentesis and endotracheal tube plac
ement.\n8. Describe image orientation, transducer placement, and scan
protocols for performing ultrasound for lung imaging and evaluation of
pneumothorax.\n9. Increase knowledge and confidence to perform and/or
interpret critical care ultrasound examinations.\n10. Apply the infor
mation discussed in a clinical setting, under supervised conditions un
til an acceptable level of proficiency and appropriate hospital creden
tialing has been achieved.\n\nCourse Topics:\n\n• Imaging fundamenta
 ls/System optimization\n• Focused abdominal scan techniques\n• FAS
 T exam and pneumothorax\n• Case studies: Abdominal\n• 2D cardiac v
 iews\n• Echo and shock\n• Pericardial effusion/Tamponade\n• Card
 iomyopathies\n• MI and complications\n• Ultrasound-guided vascular
  access\n• Ultrasound-guided procedures: Thoracentesis, pericardioce
ntesis, paracentesis, ET placement, lung\n• Venous imaging\n• Putt
ing it all together: Case based approach: Cardiac/Abdominal/Vascular/P
 rocedures/Misc.\n• Credentialing and reimbursement\n• Hands-on ses
 sions: Cardiac/Abdomen/Venous/Procedures/ Vascular access (phantoms)\n
\nWho Can Attend?\n\nCritical care, intensivists, pulmonologists, trau
ma, & emergency medicine physicians who will be involved with performi
ng & interpreting ultrasound exams. Also, internal medicine and family
practice physicians may attend. Advanced sonographers and PAs also we
 lcome.\n\nFaculty:\nChristian Butcher, MD, FCCP\nCharlotte Derr, MD, R
DMS, FACEP\nAlexander B. Levitov, MD, FCCM, RDCS\nCorky Hecht, BA, RDM
S, RDCS, RVT, RT (N)\n\nThe Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute is accredit
ed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to pr
ovide continuing medical education for physicians.\n\nThe Gulfcoast Ul
trasound Institute designates this educational activity for a maximum
of 24.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the acti
vity.\n\nApproved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for
22.25 hours of ACEP Category I credit.\n\nThis course also meets CME/C
EU requirements for ARDMS. Note: While offering the CME credit hours n
oted above, activities are not intended to provide extensive training
or certification for exam performance or interpretation.\n\nFor more i
