SUMMARY:Cardiac CT Practicum: The Total Experience
DESCRIPTION:Cardiac CT Practicum\n\nPresented by\nJohns Hopkins Univer
sity School of Medicine\nOffice of Continuing Medical Education\n\nJan
uary 10-14, 2011\n\nTo check availability and reserve your seat at thi
s activity, please call Susan Orr at 410-550-0845 or email: sorr@jhmi.
edu.\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\nThe activity is held monthly at the Johns Hopki
ns Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, in a multimedia clas
sroom constructed specifically for the learner’s needs. This is a wo
rkstation-based training activity, designed to meet American College o
f Cardiology/American Heart Association Level II and III requirements.
Each participant has their own workstation to use throughout the acti
vity and receives personal attention and instruction by the activity f
aculty. A workstation, which projects to the front of the room is used
by instructors to demonstrate various aspects of CT interpretation. A
fter receiving training on the use of the workstation, a case library
of over 150 cases selected to demonstrate the variety of pathology, wh
ich can be evaluated by CT (coronary disease, bypass grafts, stents, a
nomalies, cardiomyopathies, EP, pericardial disease, cardiac tumors) i
s reviewed. A minimum of 100 cases is reviewed during the five days of
the activity.\n\nTwenty hours of didactic instruction is included thr
ough lectures and reading materials, which will cover topics of patien
t selection, preparation, radiation, contrast, cardiac anatomy, assess
ment of cardiac function, cardiac pathology, etc. Members of the Johns
Hopkins faculty and guest faculty will present these topics. Particip
ants will take a quiz to confirm understanding of these materials.\n\n
The requirement for observation of the acquisition of 50 studies is sa
tisfied by utilizing a combination of onsite observation of approximat
ely 25 studies supplemented by interactive observation of approximatel
y 25 studies performed offsite and viewed by interactive video link. P
articipants will have the opportunity to ask questions during acquisit
ion of the studies (i.e., patient selection, use of beta blockers) and
to observe the steps in obtaining the scan by direct observation of t
he scanner console. The 50 scans that were acquired during the week of
the activity are anonymized and participants will interpret these stu
dies on their own time following the five days of onsite training. Aft
er faculty review of the participants’ interpretation of these 50 st
udies and the other elements of the activity, a certificate documentin
g completion of the Level II and III requirements will be issued.\n\nW
HO SHOULD ATTEND\n\nThis activity is intended for physicians including
cardiologists and radiologists who are currently in practice or are i
n fellowship, seeking Level II competency training. For those who have
already qualified for Level II, this added experience will meet the c
ase requirements for Level II.\n\nOBJECTIVES\n\nAfter attending this a
ctivity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:\nChoose pati
ents appropriate for this imaging modality\nPrepare patients to obtain
optimal study results\nOptimize image reconstruction for cardiac anal
yses\nUse 3D workstation to visualize all aspects of cardiac anatomy\n
Assess extent of coronary atherosclerosis and evaluate LV function\nAC
