SUMMARY:3rd Annual Scientific Symposium on Nephrogenic Systemic Fibros
is and Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents (Yale)
DESCRIPTION:3rd Annual Scientific Symposium on Nephrogenic Systemic Fi
brosis and Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents\n\nDermatology, Diagnostic
Radiology, and Internal Medicine, Section of Nephrology\n\nIn June 20
06, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a pu
blic health advisory cautioning against the use of gadolinium containi
ng contrast agents (GCCA) in patients with severe renal disease. This
advisory cited evidence suggesting an epidemiologic link between GCCA
administration and the development of the emerging disease, Nephrogeni
c Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). NSF, first described in 2000, is a serious
systemic disorder characterized by widespread tissue fibrosis. An inte
rnational NSF registry at Yale University maintains records on over 31
0 patients with NSF worldwide. Over the past year, new information has
emerged that directly impacts the clinical care and magnetic resonanc
 e imaging decision-making of patients with kidney disease.\n\nThe 3rd
Annual Scientific Symposium on Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis and Gadol
inium-based Contrast Agents” will educate physicians and allied
health professionals concerning NSF. The conference faculty will impar
t further understanding of the link between NSF and GCCA. To achieve t
his objective, the specific goals of the symposium are to: 1) provide
information on the diagnosis and treatment of NSF, 2) review current u
nderstanding of the pathophysiology of this disease, 3) present import
ant differences among the various GCCA, 4) discuss the impact on patie
nt care and practice management, and 5) discuss strategies to identify
patients with kidney disease who might be at risk. This year, the fac
ulty will include guest speakers from other US and European institutio
ns, thereby greatly enriching the program and addressing global issues
related to NSF.\n\n\nLearning Objectives\nParticipants who attend thi
s conference will be able to:\n\nReview the latest diagnosis, clinical
and epidemiological information about Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (
NSF)\n\nRecognize the link between NSF and gadolinium-based contrast a
gents\n\nDescribe the potential mechanisms leading to NSF and new ther
apies\n\nDiscuss the current strategies to reduce risk and the recomme
ndations from US and European work groups\n\nSaturday, May 9, 2009\n6
