Ever wished you could have one set of monitors, keyboard and mouse and read from multiple vendor supplied PACS workstations? Welcome to the world of quad DVI display KVM switches...maybe. I haven't tried one yet but I'm seriously thinking about it.

It's nearly $20,000 for a set of diagnostic monitors. If I can buy a KVM switch such as Startechs SV231QDVIUA, perhaps I could link one set of diagnostic monitors to two PACS workstations. and save considerable cost on monitors and workstation space.

Anyone have experience with KVM switches and multiple high resolutoin monitors?  Please respond with your experience.

Can't say I've tried it but a couple of thoughts spring to mind - 1.  putting a device between w/s and monitors may have legal implications with medical device certification - especially w.r.t. (2)  managing calibration profiles - which may be a complicated job.

As far as I know, the KVM switch is a bridge between two monitor cables.  I'm not aware that there is any processing going on that would alter the monitor calibration/look up tables.

We can check the calibration once the switch is in place.

In terms of medical device certification, we have already purchased the equipment and it has been certified by the FDA to whatever extent it's going to be.  Are you suggesting that there could be legal implications that would follow after reading a case from this setup?  Although people talk about it in the PACS/medical informatics community, I am yet to come across a case where monitor calibration has come into question.

We have 8 PACS workstations connected to this PACS and there is no documentation stored on the server which records which workstation a cases was interpreted from or whether the monitors were properly calibrated at the time the case was interpreted.

What PACS system do you guys use btw and what are the pros/cons?  We are currently looking into a PACS system.  I know a bit off topic but you all here seem very informatics-savvy!
